Holy Confidence

Psalm 46:2-3 says

2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.

5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.

6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

According to Charles Spurgeon, Psalm 46 is called a "song of holy confidence"; it is also known as "Luther's Psalm", as Martin Luther wrote his popular hymn ("A Mighty Fortress Is Our God") using Psalm 46 as a starting point.

There are many places from which we draw confidence. It could be from wealth, experience, power, other people, or simply trusting in our own abilities. Although those sources of confidence are not inherently bad, there is on one thing that is universally true about all of them. Those sources of confidence will all eventually meet an opposing force that is greater than them and they will all eventually fail.

The good news is that according to this scripture, there is a much better place from which to draw confidence.  No matter what forces may come against our God, even if the mountains give way and fall into the sea, He will still remain a place of refuge and confidence for his people.

Trust him today for a source of confidence that is never failing!
