The Table

Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me

    in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

   my cup overflows.

Just as the shepherd would go ahead of the sheep and protect them by going into the pasture to pour oil down the holes of venomous snakes that might come up out of holes and attack them as they would feast on the tinder grass, the Lord  generously protects us from our enemy. Just as the shepherd would anoint the head of the sheep with oil to protect them and provide healing to any open wounds they may have, So the Lord does for us.  As we see earlier in the 23rd psalm, he is concerned for our mental and spiritual well being.  He protects our head from an enemy that would love nothing more to invade, cause us to doubt and eventually wander away from the shepherd.

 In all of his provision and protection, my cup overflows.  There is an unending stream of blessing that flows from the father, even in the presence of my enemies.  Thanks be to God for his generosity towards us!
